Holidays "in" digestion

Top 5 ways to sooth an uncomfortable belly Ayurvedically.

Any Ayurveda practitioner would answer “It Depends” and it does. Ayurveda is a tried and true ancient practice of natural living, it invites the learner on a journey toward balance, teaching us ways to heal ourselves using self reflection and applying the observations of like increases like, opposites decrease each other and the complimenting energies in nature.

1) Taking these concepts into consideration we can start with the number one way to sooth an uncomfortable belly Ayurvedically would be prevention. Ayurveda teaches to avoid incompatible combinations of food that together in the body fight for attention causing indigestions and leaving in its wake an indigestible substance called AMMA. Amma is a by-production of a few processes in the body one of them being created by combining incompatible foods. All elements, substances and products of nature exude energy, in particular cooling and warming energies. When combining foods Ayurveda teaches that cooling and warming foods do not mix well in the belly for example fish a heating energy and milk a cooling energy Ayurveda would suggest staying away from chowders, or creamy sauces with seafood which would create this indigestible waste product that may result in indigestion.

Another prevention intervention would be eating in right amounts for your constitution. We can explore personal constitutions in another blog post but in general there is Kapha cool grounded energy, Pitta hot, productive energy and Vata cold mobile energy. A persons energetic make up will determine best eating patterns in amount and food choices that works best for each constitution. 2) Make yourself a simple tea, CCF tea, pinch of cumin, coriander and fennel in hot water sip slowly and feel soothing effect instantly.

3) Gas Belly? chew on a couple fennel seeds.

4) Constipation Belly, sip hot water slowly though out day, hot lemon water in mornings, go for a walk, and or try Ayurvedic three fruits suppliments in tablet form, Triphala, from your local vitamin store or fancy grocer. Again, best cure is prevention. Those with cooler energetic Ayurvedic constitutions may need more help than the hotter energy folks. 5) Create a pleasing environment at mealtimes, this can be done in seconds by the busy consumer by decreasing stimulation around meal times, clearing space at table, turn off screens, sit near window or sit facing the love of your life gazing into their eyes. Sitting down, taking deep breath before starting meal, take a 3 second pause to offer gratitude for all that went into getting this food to your plate. Gift yourself the luxury of truly enjoying your meal.
